How to Grow Potatoes When You Have Limited Space

My friend Debbie who runs frugaldivafrenzy.com told me about a post she did about how to ”Grow a Hundred Pounds of Potatoes in a Barrel” and I just had to share it with all of you!!!

The instructions are found on greenupgrader.com and it is so simple!!!  Now I just have to find a deal on a barrel :)

When I was at Lowes the other night looking around I saw that they had whiskey barrels there for $29.98 (too expensive for me).  Anyone know somewhere to get these for MUCH cheaper or even free ???

What about an old garbage can?

Try your local Winery or Brewery

  3. It looks like she just used a plastic garbage can ?

Use a $.50 big blue plastic bag from IKEA. These are perfect for growing potatoes!

  5. Go to free cycle at yahoo and ask if anyone has one and they don’t need it anymore also place a free add on craigslist that you want thematic at cheap price

In Tennessee (Putnam County) we have Smart Cards. They have the Ace Hardware 5 off 25. At lowes, they accept these.

  7. I use old trashcans! Some of them are cracked, but that helps with the water drainage anyway.

Or some counties/states have free recycling bins at their centers and they’d work well :)

    • I found an old giant rubbermaid tub thing with rope handles and I am going to use that (it did have all my kids sports balls in it but half were flat and not used anyway)

  8. I purchased some items from Lowes Monday and got $10 off 30.00 coupon

Amy…go to your local grocery store and ask the people at the deli if they throw away the buckets the salads (ie potato, coleslaw) come in. Wash them with a 25/75 bleach/water and let them dry. These work perfectly for growing just about anything. Don’t forget to drill plenty of drain holes in the bottom. Also if you got the deal at Lowes for the mulch (thanks for the heads up on that BTW), mulch around your veggies, it helps to keep them moist longer, so less watering. I’m growing cherry tomatoes, peppers, beans and radish on my deck in these buckets, right now.

    • I was researching this and everyone kept saying not to use potatoes from the grocery and to make sure you get certified seed potatoes. What do you think about that???
