I am not sure if I am happy or sad about this change but Walgreens will be ending their Register Rewards program within the next few months while launching the new Walgreens Balance Rewards on September 16th.
Starting 9/6, you will be able to sign up online at Walgreens.com/Balance or sign up in stores starting 9/16. You will then earn points that can be redeemed for purchases both in-store and online.
- 5,000 points = $5
- 10,000 points = $10
- 18,000 points = $20
- 30,000 points = $35
- 40,000 points = $50
One good thing about this new program is that the points won’t expire as long as you remain active by shopping at Walgreens at least once every six months and redeeming your points within three years.
I am sure we will learn a lot more about this program as it get closer to September but I wanted to give you a heads up about this program change !!!
Thanks Coupon Dad

Wow. Guess we have to wait to see what is coming. Currnetly we can get $4 RR for buying one razor. Now to get $5 we need 5,000 points? Hopefully we will get these points for spending $5 not fifty or Walgreens will be losing quite a bit of coupon business. Its hard enough already to shop there with having to waste money on filler items we don’t need. Guess we just have to wait n see.
Walgreens is very difficult place to shop. I will stick to Rite Aid and CVS.
They did this as a test in other locations. It was figured you would get around 30% of the register rewards and wags is pocketing the rest. This is nothing more than a giant ripoff. When people stop shopping at wags maybe they will get the picture.
Bye-bye Walgreens. It will no longer be worth it for me to shop there.
I really dread shopping at Walgreen’s, as it is. I get hassled all the time, by the Coupon Cops who check me out. So, I only go in on rare occasions and for photo deals. This will definitely make it less of an incentive for me to stop in. CVS, near me, has much better customer service. The store managers even know my name!
The cashier told me today, that starting the 1st of Oct they will not take any coupons and will have no coupons in their Sunday paper, No coupons of any kind. Personally I am not going to miss Walgreens.
thats CRAZY
I am not sure where this info came from, but I haven’t heard that. I work for WAGS and we were told that you have to have the card to use the store coupons. We even had to watch videos on it. I wouldn’t get all uppity until the program actually launches because right now it’s all speculation. Obviously some of the employees don’t even know what’s going on – which honestly isn’t surprising.
Please don’t write Walgreens off yet guys. I live in one of the states (VA.) where this program was originally test marketed those points add up faster than you think. I got some great stuff ! I was so sorry when it discountinued I’m sorry about the loss of RR because those two together were DYNAMITE! Give it a chance! Everything I bought counted towards those points including the Newspapers we all buy weekly. I just wonder will it work the same as the testing time? We’ll see soon enough.
This is the same as that Kmart member card is.But Kmart expires much faster.
Takes forever to earn points which sometimes gives you some cents off
I hate Kmart’s program. I have never redeemed anything from it and have received contradictory emails from them about it saying my points are expiring then saying they weren’t etc. I quit them and Sears after having terrible customer service at both services on numerous occasions.
please repost this on the 2nd to remind us all to go online to sign up (at least those of us who are interested). Thanks for the info ahead of time. Not sure if I am going to like it or not, guess we will see if their sales are still good enough to make worth shopping there. Thank goodness they recently built a CVS nearby so I have options. Wonder if prescriptions count toward the rewards?
I will def post when its time to sign up
also perscriptions DO count
This sounds like a ripoff. Walgreens is always trying to make it more difficult to use coupons. Their RR always expired too quickly. CVS is 100% better in this dept.
I think I had with Walgreens. It is such a hassle already to use coupons there not to mention the hassle to Return items as well. Last time I went I need it to return an item, I use two coupon woth $15 and they refuse to reimburse the value of this coupons! + they refund me less of what I paid!! an absolute ripoff!!! CVS still my fav.
i went in the other day to get a refund on the amount I should have gotten off (forgot to have the cashier scan the store ad coupon) and because I had used RR to pay, they wouldn’t give me the difference…. ugh I hate walgreens !!!
No wonder they have been investigated themselves for coupon fraud. Greedy!
I don’t get prescriptions at walgreen’s anymore due to insurance, so shopping there is very sporadic. I’ve been in a few times this holiday season and am already tired of hearing ‘balance rewards’ every time I turn around.
Was there today and the 1.99 item was going to be 4.99 unless I got — you guessed it — a balance rewards card. I don’t shop at drugstores enough to make the cards worth it.
Was also turned off by the cashier who was very busy picking and rubbing her arm after licking her fingers. Nice. I left without the almighty balance rewards card, or the item.
I used to like meandering around walgreen’s while waiting for a prescription, but I don’t think it is worth the time to stop there anymore.
