2 Steps Forward 1 Step Back – Kaley’s Update

Huge Thanks to some blogging friends who sent Edible Arrangements on the first day she was able to eat REAL food

Well it looks like we won’t be getting out of here any time soon.  After they started letting Kaley eat real food, and having 2 days of feeling well and no pain, she started having severe pains in her abdomen yesterday (to the point of tears most of the day) and her blood levels showed she had Pancreatitis (inflamed pancreas).  She is back on only liquids again and started taking morphine for the pain.  She had Xrays last night and an ultrasound this morning to make sure nothing else is going on and the results look good other than the inflamed pancreas so we just need to let that rest before they will let her start eating again.  They said this is very typical with this type of surgery so I am not TOO worried right now. Its just a set back that we weren’t expecting so it was kind of a blow to our spirits.

Flashes of Hope doing her hair and makeup

On a nice note, Flashes of Hope came out on Thursday and did her hair and makeup and took pictures to make her feel pretty.  They will be mailing the pictures to us once they are developed.

And then on Friday, her high school band had their yearly photos done for their huge composite picture and they actually had the photographer come out to the hospital with the color guard uniform so she could still be able to be in the picture.  Luckily that was a day she was feeling really good (and her hair was still curly from the day before).  She looked great and had a HUGE smile on her face.  I thought that was the nicest thing ever for them to do !!!

You would never know she was sick by how pretty she looks
(this is her “show” makeup which is why its so dark)

  1. I have been following all your updates on Kaley, and it breaks my heart to see such a young girl have to deal with this. I have two girls and a boy my oldest daughter is 16, and they are also in band. I read your posts and can’t help to cry, I can’t imagine having one of my kids go though something like this, and I really hope Kaley starts feeling much better, and start living a normal life. Pancreatitis is very painful, my husband had Kidney surgery in 2008, and to this day he has been suffering with it on and off, and when things get really bad he only drinks 7Up and we add chicken broth as he feels better, until he can go back to regular food. I can’t wait to see a picture of her out of the hospital and know that she is doing much better. God bless you both for being so strong. :)

    • Thanks Molly. That is horrible that your husnand still has to deal with pancreatitis…. this is no fun to watch her go through. At least they gave her strong enough meds and she has been asleep since I wrote the update several hours ago. I will DEF post pics of her waiting for the car to pull up to take us home !!!!

  2. She is gonna break alot of hearts someday. Glad she is doing better except that hopefully minor setback.

  3. she is so beautiful and has such an amazing attitude. Hard to believe there is another bump in her road to recovery…fantastic that she is getting some special attention and that they included her in the pix…You are also a very strong person with an amazing positive attitude …thanks again for sharing and hopefully the updates will be from home very soon…take care and keeping you all in my prayers and sending positive vibes

  4. Congratunation Kaley! and you look so amazzzing….!!!

  5. What a gorgeous girl! As a parent, it’s always difficult to read of such pain by someone so young, and I truly hope she feels better soon.

  6. I too was hoping to get the update that you were heading home. Big breath! I’ll keep praying!

  7. Wow, how this simple problem turned into such a long time in the hospital. I never know but what I do know is I hope you get out of there VERY soon, and you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s there!! Keeping a check on you hope for the release date soon..

  8. Aren’t kids GREAT??!! :) Not to mention, BEAUTIFUL! The world is a better place because of our children. Even in difficult times, they find something to smile about, to get excited about. Hold on, Amy. And hugs to your daughter. To other readers: HUG YOUR KIDS!!

  9. Amy,

Still praying for Kaley. So sorry for the set back.

I know the hospital bill will be HUGH, where can I and other blog followers sent money to help out? I know there are a lot of good people that would like to help out.

Kaley, you look wonderful!! Thanks for letting mom share the pictures.

Please let us know if you can set up an account or PO Box, so we can help.

    Thanks,
    Denise

    • awwww you are so nice…. I have NO CLUE what my portion will be after insurance and I haven’t even begun to think about it. I think there is a law that hospital bills can’t hurt your credit score so I am not worried about it too much. I just need them to do everything they can do to get her better and deal with the financial issue later.

      • Oh they ding credit reports all the time- even more if they turn it over to a collection agency. At least she is not in jacksonville where they are allowed to put a lien on your house without a lawsuit. My wife’s coworker stayed there 4 days and 2 days after he got home he got notice of a lien on his house. My guess is that practice is against state law. If it is so huge you cannot pay and they sue and win a judgment then they cannot garish pay or do anything else if you are head of household with a kid.

  10. WoW!! She looks great. I am surprised they haven’t kicked her out on the theory that anyone who looks that good, can’t be sick! ;) My kids are also in band and I know what that means to them….so kudos to the director or principal or whoever sent the photographer out! I am so sorry that Kaley had to be in so much pain – it was probably worse after thinking things were all better. Hang in there!!!

  11. Hi,
Just wanted to mention that I saw an actress, Amy Brenneman, on the View last Monday and she said that the has ulcerative colitis, and that she had her large intestine removed and she explained to the audience that she had problems with it her whole life until she got the large intestine out and she is doing great. She mentioned that she is going to start doing PSA (public service announcements) for the UC foundation to bring awareness to people about it.

I also wanted to tell you that for every person that sends you a note there are probably hundreds more who have never written, but are with you sending you love and prayers and healing for you and your daughter. (I’m one of those people!!). Please know we are all sending you love and blessings!!
    (One of your newest fans!).

    • My mom was just telling me about that episode of the View. I actually have the View set up to record each day so once I get home it SHOULD be on my DVR. Can’t wait to watch it with Kaley.

The ostomy nurse told us that Barbara Steisand also has an ostomy, I had no clue. I bet there are many people that have it and just don’t share about it. Glad to hear someone will be talking about it more.

And thank you for your support !!! <3

  12. Amy,

I will continue to keep you both you and Kaley in my prayers.

  13. Your daughter is beautiful and hopefully will be home very soon! The cameraderie the kids have in band is amazing! They all have her in their hearts! Denise’s comments are right, so many are thinking and praying for speedy recovery!

  14. What a sweet gift and a very cool project, as well. She looks beautiful! I’m so sorry it’s been quite the ordeal=( I can’t imagine what you guys are going through. Keeping you in my prayers!:) Get well soon, Kaley!
