Small Changes For Big Savings

For a lot of people, the recession of the late noughties was a massive rude awakening, prompting them to tighten their belts, cut back on luxuries, and put more money into savings. However, now that the economy has perked up so much, people are spending more, and saving less. If you feel that your personal finances are slipping through your fingers, here are some quick and easy changes that you can save you heaps of cash!

Put your Money into a Routine

Giving yourself a solid financial routine is one of the most effective ways to regain control of your money, and dodge unnecessary expenses like overdraft fees and late charges on loan payments or utility bills. No one wants to be late to pay a bill, or slip into their overdraft, but basic principles of money management can often slip through the net when you don’t keep your eye on the ball. Turn all this around by getting into a more structured routine. Set a day of the week where you have some free time, and dedicate part of it to going through routine tasks, like going over your expenses, reconciling your bank accounts, and verifying credit and debit receipts. Establishing a routine and sticking to it will allow you to accomplish more in your life, like tracking a budget and monitoring investments. You can find some more advice here .

Switch to Better Service Providers

We all have to pay various recurring expenses to keep a comfortable home. Electricity, water, gas, internet and TV all represent a drain on our money, and they’re not something that you can forego when you’re trying to penny-pinch for a couple of weeks. The easiest way to save money on these things is simply switching to a cheaper provider. Most people can afford to save on at least one recurring subscription or bill by doing a little research and finding a company that will offer them a better deal. Even if you’ve been getting a bargain from several different providers, you may be able to save money by bundling services together with deals like this

Be Smart with Groceries

We all know that it’s more cost-effective to eat out less, and have more home-cooked meals. However, don’t fool yourself by thinking that buying groceries will save you money in and of itself. If you go to the supermarket without a well-planned shopping list and your belly growling, you can easily make a string of knee-jerk impulse buys, and end up paying way more than you have to. To make sure you’re being smart with your grocery shopping, make a point of planning at least three cost-effective meals in advance. If each of these meals are enough for leftovers, it can feed the whole family for a week! You can save even more by making the main dish of one meal meat-free; a big garden salad, pasta primavera, etc. You should also try out some cheaper brands – you’ll be surprised at how tasty some of them are!

Grappling With Difficult Gifts?

Buying the perfect gift is always a challenge, especially for those of us who love to find the perfect thing. You scour the shops in the hope of finding something just right. And, more often than not, it comes to you when you’re about to give up. Nothing beats that feeling of satisfaction. But, you can’t find the right thing if you have no clue where to start searching. Some people are harder to buy for than others, and that’s what we’re going to focus on. For those hard to buy people, even starting the search can be tough. We’re going to look at a few of the most difficult people to buy for, and a few ideas to help you out!

Not all men are tough to buy for. Some give us plenty of ideas and make the job easier. For the most part, though, men are harder than women. Mainly because you don’t have flowers and chocolates to fall back on. Plus, the gift market isn’t so well aimed at men. There are many small trinkets for women, but few men are interested in that kind of thing. So, what can you get instead? It’s important to think outside the box. Is there a series he’s dying to watch? Does he have a particular interest? A love of sports, for example, opens up a few options. You could buy him a kit from his favorite team, or a ball of his own. And, don’t think that options like jewelry are out of the question, either. It may not be such a good idea to buy a man a necklace, but that doesn’t mean this option is a no-go. If he has his ears pierced, why not get him some earrings, like the ones found here? The trick is to make sure you choose something that suits his style! That way, your gift is sure to be well received.

Most of the time, we only buy gifts for the people who mean the most. Sometimes, though, it’s necessary to buy for acquaintances. It may be that they’ve started buying for you, or that you know you’ll be seeing them around their birthday. Whatever the reason, this can be a nightmare. To make things easier, stick to general gifts that most people would enjoy. Again, women are easier here. You can buy a cute notepad or a box of chocolates. For men, it’s best to stick to joke presents. But, make sure the receiver will understand that joke! Big tubs of sweets are also a good choice if you’re out of ideas.

Some people have everything. When we ask them what they want, they shrug their shoulders. If they’re at a loss, what do they expect us to do? In these situations, it’s best to opt for a meaningful gift. Something personalized, or homemade is your best bet. It’s a thoughtful gift, and you can be sure they won’t have anything quite like it.

How To Cut Back Without Missing Out

At some point, pretty much everyone takes a look at their bank account and decides that it’s time to cut back for a while so that you can let your savings accumulate instead of spending money like it’s going out of fashion. The problem with saving money is that it sometimes feels as though it can be pretty boring – what about seeing your friends? What about keeping up with the latest fashions? Luckily there are some ways that you can cut back without cutting too much out…

Quit The Gym And Get A Buddy

Quitting the gym is one of the best ways that you can save money. Membership fees are usually pretty extortionate and a lot of the time you don’t even end up going there often enough to make it worthwhile. Instead, team up with one of your friends who is similarly strapped for cash and get fit together by going running or practising yoga together. Not only will you keep fit but you’ll also have fun.

Look Around For Deals

Make sure that you keep your eyes open for deals – luckily they’re pretty much everywhere, from buy one get one free deals at the store to car finance deals that will help you out if your finances aren’t looking too cheerful – here’s an example of a loan you might want to check out if you’re having cash flow problems. Remember not to get taken in by a deal – don’t buy three for two bottles of shampoo if you won’t actually use them!

Learn To Cook

Convenience food is hugely expensive so it’s time to learn to cook. Look online for easy nutritious recipes and marvel at how much cheaper it is to buy ingredients from fresh instead of going for pre-made meals. Start batch cooking and take your own meals to work instead of going to the expensive canteen or getting Starbucks every day.

Invite Your Friends Over

If you’re a social butterfly who needs to save money you might already be mourning the concept of not being able to go out with your friends in the evenings. If you have kids, babysitters are expensive, and we’ve all been on the sort of nights out where dinner turns into drinks turns into dancing turns into an expensive cab ride home and a credit card bill that makes you feel as though you’re going to faint. Instead, invite your friends over or go for a picnic. Ask each of them to bring something like a bottle of wine or a dish that you can share, and have a girls’ night in instead of going out.

Go Vintage

Finally, if you love fashion, it’s time to go vintage. Start sifting through ebay and through vintage and thrift stores for fashion ideas. Nineties style is very much in at the moment – look at the female characters on the first two seasons of Friends for inspiration! – and chances are, if you start looking through second hand clothes you’ll get some real bargains. Take them home, wash and iron them, and you’ll have some incredible new outfits.

Savvy Ways To Save On Home Repairs

Everyone loves a bargain, there’s no mistaking that. But if your bargain hunting is causing your house to fall apart because you’re doing patch jobs instead of getting in some real help to fix structural issues, you could end up spending extortionate amounts of money instead of saving it.

Before you even begin on any kind of home repairs, you need to make sure you have the time. If home repairs cost money, they also cost you minutes in the day and if you don’t have those minutes to spare, you should have a rethink on the repairs you need to do. There’s no point in starting a job if you are going to end up living on a building site. Interior design is always regarded as something that will cost a lot of money, but if you’re smart about where you make your savings, you can make sure your home looks beautiful.

  • Create Your Budget: Sit down and make a list of the repairs you need to do on the house. By doing this first, you can work out how much money you can spend on each room. Always plan the structural issues as a priority and the interior design as the afterthought. It’s nice to make a kitchen look pretty but it’s no good to you if the winter has caused frozen water pipes and is springing a leak. Fix the broken parts first with the budget you have set, and you can then have the money that is left on the cosmetic fixes.
  • Shop Savvy: Sales are your friend. You can make a lot of savings on paint, wood, flooring and lighting if you check out the sales through the year and only shop when the things you need for the house are on offer. Take the time to compare the brand names for the store names and you will often find that the store version is just as good as the branded item.
  • Second Hand Winning: Buying used materials for home projects is always going to make some turn their nose up, but if you can see the value in the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) you’ll always find value in salvaged materials.
  • Negotiate: If you are hiring in contractors to help with the jobs that are a little beyond your reach, make your savings by negotiating prices. Get quotes to cover three or four different companies or independent contractors and always get references from previous customers. You don’t want to go too low with what you pay for, as a cheap contractor’s work often needs fixing by another contractor – not a good way to make savings.

Working on your house can be a pleasure but if you’re maxing out your credit cards and spending more than you plan, it will end up causing a lot of unnecessary stresses. Take your time to plan your renovations carefully and make a point of planning a savings timeline so you can get the maximum out of your budget and for your home.
